How To Redesign Old House For More Livability

One feature of a my very modern house is having more space than in the victorian inner terrace I bought many years ago.  My word I was so proud of that little old house.  Mind you, it was freezing cold in winter because I couldn’t afford a house that had been fully modernised.  I just had rather old gas fires in the lounge and main bedroom.  I recall there were these huge storage heaters which at once time were all the rage in properties where central heating would be a major challenge.  These would certainly cause some misgivings to the modern home designer today, should one be called in to renovate and revitalise such a place.  That old house had a very narrow passageway from the front door down to the kitchen at the back and yet there was a full staircase up to the bedrooms – it too was very narrow and terrifyingly steep.  I’m sure a designer would find a way of moving that around so the upper floors could be safely negotiated.  I’m sure that some of my heftier colleagues would get jammed if they tried going up to the upstairs bathroom – a very rare luxury in those days.
